In conjunction with Network Rail Permanent Way Section Managers, Selectequip has designed a range of Mileposts to replace the often broken or missing trackside signs.
Several alternative materials are available, depending on the likely occurrence of damage or vandalism.
BENEFITS
- The V-shaped signs are clearly visible from both directions, even in poor visibility.
- Choice of materials of construction provides a suitable alternative for all circumstances.
- All materials are robust and lightweight enabling easy transportation trackside.
- Makrolon, as used in anti-riot shields, is capable of withstanding abuse from axes and sledgehammers.
The new Selectequip Milepost was designed as a result of engineers within Network Rail requiring a major improvement on the design that was currently in use. They wanted a sign that would not only withstand the elements, but also one that would not be too appealing to vandals and thieves and yet still be in place, looking good, for many years to come. Selectequip designed the Milepost Sign using very new materials, one of which, Makrolon Polycarbonate, is used by police forces around the country in the construction of their riot shields.
Makrolon Polycarbonate is unique in the fact that it cannot be penetrated, it is virtually indestructible, resistant to fire, and more importantly, has no scrap value whatsoever. In order to combat the vandals further the sign is finished with Selectequip's AGF, (Anti-Graffiti Film). This provides a final coating that allows any graffiti to be removed without any damage to the surface of the sign, not only removing the graffiti but leaving the important mileage information intact.
The Milepost head is then permanently attached to the post using 3 x vandal-proof screws. The post itself represents another major breakthrough in the design of future signage within the rail industry as it is manufactured from 100% recycled material, which came about as a result of discussions with Chris Davis, Environment Engineer (LNE).
Selectequip had been in discussions with Chris regarding the design of a new SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) sign, incorporating the use of fully sustainable materials. In further discussions with LNE (Gary Costello) regarding the design of the new milepost, Gary decided that the recycled post would be a better option than the use of a conventional galvanised steel post.
The post now supplied with the Milepost and the SSSI signs are made from 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC MILK BOTTLES, providing an extremely dense and heavyweight material which is virtually non-degradable.
The use of these posts not only offers the user confidence in the fact that they are using fully sustainable materials, it also promises a huge increase in the life term of the post, which will help provide clear trackside signage for a minimum of 40 years.
